Woodside Adds Farmington Hills As Sixth Campus
Mike Wendland
It’s been a busy summer as Woodside’s new Farmington Hills campus prepares for its offi cial launch on Sunday Sept. 19, following overwhelming approval last month from Woodside and Farmington Hills Baptist members to merge the two churches.
The church is located at 28301 Middlebelt Road, just north of 12 Mile Road on the west side of Middlebelt. Sunday worship is at 10:45 a.m.
Just a week after the approval votes last month, there was a special Woodside of Farmington Hills fl oat in the big Founders Festival in Farmington, a booth with games, a clown and face painting in the downtown area and thousands of postcards being distributed noting that there was “a New Church in Town.”
Then, the last week of July, nearly 200 children showed up at the campus for a special “Kids Camp” vacation Bible school experience.
We sure hit the ground running,” says Eric Haven, Woodside’s Campus Life Pastor, who has been steering the transition teams at the new location. “We are so blessed with so many dedicated and high-capacity volunteers from Farmington Hills Baptist who are assuming key leadership positions and getting the word out to the community.”
Beth McKenna, Woodside’s director of new campus development, has also been at The new location on a daily basis, coordinating volunteer teams who are painting, putting up signage and recruiting new attendees.
We have openings in many areas - greeters, ushers, children’s leaders, worship, teaching, small groups, students, technical,” she notes. “There is room for everyone and we can create a serving schedule that works for them.”
Volunteers can reach her by phone at 248-879-8533 or by e-mailing bethmckenna@ woodsidebible.org.
Also announced was a new Campus Pastor – Steve Baker, who will start on Sept. 19. Baker, a native of Kalamazoo, spoke to the Farmington Hills congregation in mid-July. He comes to Woodside from Bible Baptist Church in Romeoville, IL, where has been senior pastor for the past five years.
Baker is excited to help lead the new campus.
“Perhaps the greatest source of joy I have found in ministry has been the opportunity to encourage people to take the next step spiritually,” he says. “As we grow in Christ, we share His burden to reach our community for the Kingdom.”
He is married to Carissa and has four sons, ranging in age from two to 10. Samuel, born in 1998, died in 2007 of complications from a birth defect.
Woodside Senior Pastor Doug Schmidt, who began meeting with leaders from Farmington Hills Baptist early this year, said both churches prayed long and hard about the merger.
“We clearly felt God’s hand in this,” said Schmidt. “And we’ve continued to see Him leading us since the vote. The transitions are going really well and there seems to be great excitement among the people.
We are off to a great start at Farmington Hills and I praise the Lord that He has trusted us with another campus of wonderful people. ”
Openings Abound For Ministry Volunteers

You don’t have to be a musician or a singer, a writer or an artist, handy with a hammer or an accomplished speaker to make a difference in life at Woodside Bible Church.
For a moment or two, consider your interests as well as your abilities. Do you like meeting new people, love gardening, Appreciate good books, savor the smell of good coffee, fi nd technology fascinating, or simply enjoy lending a hand when a need surfaces?
If the answer is yes, there’s a spot for you in Woodside’s corps of volunteers.
“There are hundreds of volunteer opportunities here at Woodside in Troy. The service commitment varies widely, depending on the type of ministry Opportunity,” said Nick Deane, director of volunteer engagement at the Troy campus.
Some openings range from an hour per week, biweekly or monthly, to as many as 10 to 15 hours per week.”
Similar opportunities exist at the campuses in Farmington Hills, Lake Orion, Royal Oak, Warren, and White Lake.
“Volunteer opportunities are organized by four major themes: Missions, ministry, campus, and community,” said Deane.
Several new support ministries are making a debut at the Troy campus. A new graphic development ministry is already off the ground and looking for graphic designers, photographers and animators to round out the team.
This fall two more ministries will roll out.
The fi rst of the new service Ministries is the White Glove Team, a cadre of people who will help keep the lobby environment clean, comfortable and eye-appealing. The Seek and Serve ministry will offer women an opportunity for fellowship, Bible study, devotions, and service all in one program.
Some of the volunteer openings have requirements such as training, auditions, background screening, and church membership, said Deane. For many the chief requirement is willingness and reliability.
“The greatest number of volunteers are needed on the First Impressions Team,” said Deane. “That’s the team that provides greeters and ushers, staffs the north and south welcome desks, and supplies parking lot security for Woodside worship services and other special events. The next highest priority is staffing roles that support Saturday and Sunday worship services.”
In addition to the tech team, coffeehouse and bookstore, all areas of the youth ministry, from nursery to high school, have openings to be filled.
Flyers on the Service Connection boards in the Troy lobby can help prospective volunteers match their interests and availability with specific campus and community needs.
Each flyer describes the commitment and the time required for each position. If a service project is of interest, please complete a flyer and turn it in to the office.
For unanswered questions, look for the general service flyer or contact Nick Deane by e-mail, nickdeane@ woodsidebible.org, or by phone, 248- 879-8533 x146.
There are volunteer opportunities at every campus for anyone with a little or a lot of time to give. The Farmington Hills, Lake Orion, Royal Oak, Warren, and White Lake church offices can provide information about volunteer opportunities on their respective campuses.
