Diane Pastor Benson has been doing this daily, after she and her husband pur-chased their home on 10 wooded acres in Saugatuck in 2013. They needed a safe environ-ment for their eight rescued weims to thrive, and immediately invested in securely fencing-in six acres of the property. Recently they decided to open their doggie oasis to the local community, and Camp Saugapup was born. Safety is the foundation upon everything they built, and a major safety protocol is their decision to cater to dogs over 40lbs. “Although many small dogs like to play with the big dogs, it’s not always the case the other way around. There is a lot of unpredictability in playgroups with a size difference of over 50%, and that’s a risk we are not willing to take here”, Diane says. Although Diane has over 20 years’ experience living with multiple canines, she became certified through the dog*tec Academy to further her pack management skills. She is also certified in canine first aid/CPR, assures less than 10 dogs per caregiver, and requires a behavioral evaluation prior to campers being accepted onto the grounds. There is a lot of natural ter-rain to explore, and chemicals or pes-ticides are never used anywhere on the property. Amenities include chew-proof toys, agility equipment, a doggie pool, and even a 576-square-foot out-door sandbox for dogs who like to get their DIG ON! Nestled in the park is also a cus-tom, temperature-con-trolled playbarn for scheduled naps and inclement weather. To learn more visit www.campsauga-pup.com, or call them at (269) 355-2504.
