We emphasize the positive attributes of goal setting and leadership skills within a responsible, safe martial art setting. Instructor: Randall Stoddard Cross Country - 6th Grade Sixth grade cross country is for those students who may be interested in running at the middle or high school level or those who simply want to learn more about the sport in a positive team environment. Cross country will offer kids the chance to experience the fun, train hard and participate in a middle school sport with various competitions throughout the season. Instructor: Sandy Stafford Cross Country - Heritage Come join us and learn the fun involved with the sport of cross country running! Participants will learn through teamwork, unique experiences, various types of workouts, drills and fun, what cross country is all about. Workouts will have instruction in training, racing and stretching and will include work on individual goals, performance and personal achievements. There will be three to five competitions throughout the season. Please note that most competitions will be on Saturdays. Instructor: Theresa Stern & Carolyn Curry Cross Country Winter Conditioning The middle school cross country coaches will be offering a winter training/off season running and conditioning program to help cross country runners stay in shape and continue their running in a positive team oriented environment during the late fall/early winter months. We will meet four days a week and within each week various areas will be targeted to keep runners in shape, strong and healthy during the off season. Along with running there will be, as always, lots of fun along the way. So come join us as we stay in shape and brave any kind of weather! Participants will receive a special piece of logo wear designed for happy running in mind! Instructor: Sandy Stafford Cross Country Camp - Middle School XC Saline’s middle school cross country coaches invite potential middle school cross country runners to attend a preseason training camp. Get in shape for the upcoming season, learn to train and race for success and also set personal goals for the season. Training plans and organization will be based on the ability and fitness of each runner all while working together within a team environment. Participants should plan to train between 3 and 5 miles each day based on fitness and experience. Registration includes a t-shirt; please indicate shirt size when registering. Fall 2017 XC season will officially begin on Monday, August 28. Instructor: Sandy Stafford Field Hockey - Girls Youth League Experience one of the fastest growing sports in the area! Our youth field hockey players will learn the tactical and technical aspects of the game in a fun environment. Players will learn the importance of good sportsmanship, being a team player and giving 110% effort. Teams will be coached by former UM players Courtney Alexander and Bree Arvai. Practice will begin on September 13 from 6-8 pm at Liberty gym and will run for five consecutive weeks. Games will be played on Saturday mornings from 9-10:30 am at the Saline High School aux turf field. Instructor: Courtney Alexander & Bree Arvai Horseback Riding Lessons Children ages 5 to 17 and ranging in skill level from beginner to advanced are welcome to attend these lessons. Ability will be evaluated on the first day. You will learn all about horses including how to saddle, brush and groom the horse as well as how to clean its hoofs. You will also learn how to ride in a basic balance position and to have fun while being safe and educated at the same time. Participants should wear comfortable clothing appropriate for weather conditions including shoes or boots with heels, a shirt with sleeves and stretch or stirrup type pants. Also, please bring a riding helmet if you have one; otherwise, a bike helmet will work. One make up session will be permitted during each session. Classes run each week on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The fee is $92 for four lessons. Ages 5-17. One make up is permitted during each session. Any dates that are holidays can be changed by your lesson person. Instructor: Carolyne Wheeler, Rachel Wood and Alyssa Hopper Kids Power Karate The Kids Power Karate program offers traditional martial arts training to children ages 5 through 12 and emphasizes self-defense, physical fitness, conflict resolution, teamwork and anti-kidnapping techniques. This program is designed specifically for children and teaches prevention first. It does not promote active aggressiveness, but teaches children to respect themselves, others and the skills they learn. There is no better program for kids! Wear loose fitting clothes. A responsible adult must remain in attendance during class. This class takes place at PKSA Saline, 707 W. Michigan Avenue in Saline. Instructor: Kids Power Karate Junior Tackle Football We are going on the road! In 2017, we will unite and play against competition from other schools in the Wolverine Youth Football League. This program will teach the essential football skills in a team setting and serves as the main feeder program to the Saline Middle School football teams as well as for the teams at Saline High School. Players will learn the offensive and defensive systems put in place by our own legendary head football coach, Joe Palka. MANDATORY FITTING DAYS - August 3 or August 9, 4-6:00pm. Location: Pleasant Ridge Elementary PRACTICES - Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays until school starts, then Tuesdays & Thursdays. Away game locations: Held at various locations in S.E. Michigan FEE - $180.00 LEAGUE INFORMATION - Depending on the number of registrations, Saline will place 1-3 teams in the Wolverine Youth Football League (run independently from Saline CE) that consists of teams from other schools from around our area. Instead of playing against each other on Sundays, we are now playing against other schools on Saturday mornings/afternoons. Teams will be divided (if necessary) based on the number of registrations and if a divide needs to occur, the teams will be split based on various factors. REGISTRATION: Registration is open! The deadline to register is August 22 at 4:00 pm. A $15 late fee will apply beginning August 23 and late registrations will be put on a waiting list. Saline Youth Cheer Clinic Youth cheer clinic open for pre K-5th grade where they will learn basic cheers, chants, tumbling and stunting from the Varsity Cheer team. There will be two practices and an opportunity to cheer at Hornet Stadium along with the Varsity Cheer team on Friday night. All participants will receive a t-shirt and a bow. Instructor: Cathy Mutter & Sara Kawiecki Sanchin Ryu’s Family Karate This program is designed for parents AND children of all ages! It is set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere, that allows parents to learn alongside their children. Physical techniques will be instructed along with drills and exercises, to help you have a positive experience with your self-defense education. You will learn how to use your whole body, rather than just certain muscle groups, so size and stature are not issues. Instructor: Scott Machniak, 4th Degree Black Belt Sanchin Ryu’s Karate for Kids Students will be trained with proven, age-appropriate techniques, that are necessary for kids to protect themselves from attackers. This program is set in a fun, yet structured environment which will give your child a positive outlook on learning a martial art. We focus on healthy attitudes versus perfection! Participants will achieve great self-confidence and leadership through physical techniques, mental strategies, drills and exercises they are lead through. Instructor: Scott Machniak, 4th Degree Black Belt Travel Basketball - Boys The 2017-2018 competitive travel season will start with tryouts for grades 3-6 on Sunday, October 15 (grades 7-8 tryout in December). The season runs from November to March. Tryout schedule is as follows: grades 3/4 at 2-3:15 pm, grades 5/6 at 3:30-5 pm. Youth Volleyball League The purpose of the Community Education Volleyball League is to provide students with an opportunity to learn and develop volleyball skills, play games in an organized setting, understand good sportsmanship and teamwork, and have fun! This league is designed for both beginning and experienced players, and no previous volleyball experience is required. The league is open to all boys and girls in grades 5-6th and 7-8th and will be co-ed. Beginning the week of October 9, practices will be held once a week on weekdays and will run for approximately and hour and a half. Practice times and locations will vary from team to team. It is possible for practice to start as early as 6:00 p.m. and will end no later than 9:00 p.m. Games will be scheduled on Saturdays beginning on October 21 and ending on December 2. There will be no games on November 11. Coaches will contact each player to let them know their exact practice time and location. If there are times you absolutely cannot practice, please list them on your registration form and every attempt will be made to place your child on a team that will not practice at that time. Returning players may use their jersey from last year or purchase on site the day of the first game. Volunteers are needed to coach each team. Head coaches must be adults and should have basic knowledge of volleyball and a desire to help kids learn. Assistant coaches are also needed and limited to one per team. Your help is greatly needed and appreciated, as the league would not be possible without the help of volunteer coaches.
