Coming Attractions!: Junior Theater Winter session 2018 will mark the 14th anniversary of our Junior Theater program for students in grades 1st-8th. Our class will begin in early January and run through mid-March. This class will meet and rehearse on Saturdays from 9:00 am-12:00 pm and Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 pm, with some additional evening rehearsals as we get closer to performance dates. We will mount a full-scale musical production and in the process of rehearsing the show will familiarize students with basic acting, singing, and movement concepts, as well as stage areas and terminology. Auditions will take place once the class begins. Watch for the winter brochure for further program details. Instructor: Rebecca L. Groeb Fiddle Club - 6th Grade Explore a mix of fun, rhythmic music and continue to be a part of the Saline fiddling tradition! Expanding on techniques learned in orchestra, students will explore fiddling from all around the world with Mr. Briere and Mr. Culver. The 6th Grade Fiddle Club is for music students in 6th grade with playing experience on violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, mandolin, or banjo. Fiddle Club will perform with the Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic at their hometown shows. Students enrolled in Saline Middle School orchestra, choir, or band are eligible to participate. Please specify instrument and t-shirt size at time of registration. Instructors: Matthew Briere & Ben Culver Guitar Stars The children will learn the fundamentals of guitar playing, including holding the guitar and pick, proper fret-hand finger position, sight reading, playing by ear and playing basic songs. Returning students will be taught chords and other harmony parts to accompany the class. Returning students will also be taught “blues” scales and will be encouraged to improvise with these scales. Each child will receive a participation award and guitar-related prizes. Fee includes guitar book. Instructor: Afterschool Enrichment Solutions KidzKeys KidzKeys uses color and tons of FUN to introduce students in K-3rd grade to the joy of playing the piano. Using the colorful Chroma-Notes™ system and Kodaly rhythm syllables, students quickly learn to read musical notation while they play familiar songs they will love to practice in class and at home. Our experienced teachers do a great job with both beginning and advanced students, so no experience is needed to join! Each session ends with a class recital for family and friends! Let’s Dance is an after school program that integrates jazz and traditional ballet with fun creative movement and choreography. Taught by our highly trained and encouraging teachers, our dance classes promote self-expression and build confidence to help students achieve in all fields, while getting to dance with their friends! Instructor: FineArtsMatter Teacher Middle School Jazz Band All students enrolled in Saline Middle School band, orchestra or choir are eligible to participate in 7th and 8th Grade Jazz Band. All band instruments, guitar, bass, piano and drum set are included. *Special note for guitar, bass, piano and drum set players: Space for these instruments is limited. An audition may be necessary to determine who will get the available positions. Guitar and piano players must read music and be able to play their instrument before they register. Guitar and piano players do not need to be enrolled in a middle school music class. Instructor: Benjamin Reed Red Apple Opera The Red Apple Opera Company is an opera workshop program for children in grades 3-7. Participating students will be introduced to the world of opera by expanding their skills in singing, acting, staging and movement. Although previous experience is not necessary, a love of singing and storytelling is important. The workshop will conclude with a fully staged production of Shakespeare on Trial, a fun musical celebrating the life and works of William Shakespeare. Performances will be held February 9 at 7 pm and February 10 at 2 pm at Liberty School. Instructor: Bob Cindric & Norma Freeman Stage Stars Your time to shine, it’s acting time! In Stage Stars children will learn theater terms, play games, and act in short skits. During theater games, students will use their creativity to communicate and improvise. The carefully selected skits are based on folk tales that teach cooperation and positive moral values. Every student will have the opportunity to play at least one lead role per session. Stage Stars participants can also earn prizes for identifying and explaining parts of a skit and goals of the characters. Each child will be given a participation award. Parents are invited to attend the final performance on the last day of class! Instructor: Afterschool Enrichment Solutions Youth Theater Guild The play’s the thing! For the 7th year, Saline Community Education presents Youth Theater Guild, a theater production class for students in grades 2nd-8th. We will mount a full-scale, non-musical production of “From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” and in the process of learning and rehearsing the show will focus on some important drama concepts including: audition tips, effective use of voice, face and body in character impressions, hands-on strategies and exercises for character development and developing relationships with other characters on stage, scene interpretation/creating emotional levels, and effective pacing. Students will familiarize themselves with basic stage areas, and commonly used theater terminology and concepts. Students of all ability and experience are welcome! Auditions for specific roles will take place once the class begins. Performances will be held in Liberty Auditorium and are scheduled for November 10 & 11 at 7:00 pm. Instructor: Rebecca L.
