Communities across West Michigan held parades, barbecues and fireworks displays through the long holiday weekend. Warm weather kept the area marinas hopping and Oval Beach and other sandy venues filled with sun-bathing and boating enthusiasts. Visitors and residents alike took time to try the fare at Phil’s, The Butler and other eateries. Evenings were filled with the a cacaphony of “pops”, “bangs”, “whistles” and explosions of light and sound during the popular fireworks display. “We love coming to Saugatuck to celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Judy Rasmussen of Chicago, who, along with her family, enjoyed throwing a frisbee while sip-ping cool refreshements along the Kalamazoo River near the Butler’s outdoor deck. Brian Fishman of Detroit said he and friends were spending a long weekend here to enjoy “the sun, the music, the beer and the beautiful ladies!” Paulette Jenkins and her girlfriend, Janice Foster, drove the short distance from St. Joseph to join the throng of partiers to watch the local fireworks display. “Nothing better than Saugatuck in the summertime,” shared Jenkins. Enjoying a quieter, yet fun-and-sun filled 4th of July were water loungers, swimmers, kayakers, pon-tooners and sailboarders on beautiful Goshorn Lake.
