"COMMITTED TO THE WORD” BIBLE CONFERENCE COMING IN SEPTEMBER

MIKE WENDLAND

For the Christian church, these are trying times.

Just look around. We are in the midst of the most sweeping and most rapid cultural change that has ever occurred in our lifetimes.

We now live in a post Christian world, a time in which personal world views, ideologies, cultural mores and political philosophies are no longer rooted in the teachings of Christianity and the Bible.

And yet, says Woodside Senior Pastor Doug Schmidt, in the midst of such confusion and drifting is perhaps the church’s most pressing challenge, its most exciting opportunity

- to “unleash God’s Word to a culture that is desperately searching for real truth and real meaning.” Thus, for two days on September 13 and 14, a Sunday and Monday, Woodside Bible Church’s Troy campus will host a special conference that will inspire, equip and encourage pastors, church leaders and Christians from all walks of life to recharge and refocus their life and ministry in these very unique times.

Called “Committed to the Word,” the event is expected to draw Christians, pastors and church leaders from across the Midwest.

“This has been a dream of mine for a long time,” says Schmidt. “There are so many churches and pastors and Christians who are right in the thick of all these changes and they’re in need right now of some special inspiration and equipping.” To that end, Schmidt has lined up a powerful list of some of the top Bible teachers in the world who will be presenting both days. In addition, there will be a series of seminars and workshops for Monday afternoon aimed at helping pastors and church leaders improve their skills and meet various ministry challenges.

General sessions in which the internationally- known speakers will be presenting will be open to everyone.

Among those speakers are:

• Dr. Al Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary- the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world.

Mohler has been recognized by such influential publications as Time and Christianity Today as a leader among American evangelicals. In fact, Time.

Com called him the “reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S”

• Dr. Joe Stowell, president of Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Stowell has written numerous books including “The Trouble with Jesus,” “Following Christ,” “Simply Jesus and You,” and “Radical Reliance.” He also works with RBC Ministries in Grand Rapids. He also serves on the board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association

• Jeff Smith, Director of Salt & Light Ministries based near Richmond, VA, known worldwide as a master Bible teacher, specializing in drama, worship arts, music ministry, teacher training, children’s ministry, and creative arts.

Along with the two-day “Committed to the Word” Bible Conference, a Saturday-only seminar called “Kid’s Ministry Unleashed: Connecting Kids to God” will draw a crowd of children’s and youth pastors, teachers and volunteers.

Smith will also be speaking at that event, sponsored by Woodside’s Children’s Ministry Department.

“When you look around the country, there just aren’t very many special sessions like this aimed at those working in children’s ministry,” said Doug Askew, Young Families Pastor. “We’re already hearing from church people who are so excited about this.” Although the “Committed to the Word” conference doesn’t officially start until Sunday afternoon, Schmidt hopes to get his main speakers to speak during regular weekend worship services at the various Woodside campuses.

Two special Web sites have been set up for the events.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR MCREST PROGRAM

CHRISTINE L. MOBLEY

Calling all campuses. Woodside is seeking volunteers to help with the MCREST program May 31-June 7 at Woodside’s Warren campus.

The purpose of MCREST, or Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team, is to provide temporary shelter for the homeless in Macomb County through its 84 participating churches.

While in the program, participants – or guests – agree to remain drug and alcohol free. The participating churches agree to open their doors for one week and provide the guests with a safe, clean environment from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. each day.

Woodside has agreed as a participating church to provide guests with three meals a day, showers, laundry services, and transportation.

The Warren campus will open its facilities to shelter 30 homeless men. Women and children will be housed at another participating church.

When talking with MCREST administrators, Barb Bauman, Woodside’s coordinator for the MCREST program, she discovered that two out of three people in the program have recently lost their home due to foreclosure and eviction.

“I think as a church body and as a caring group of people, carrying out Christ’s Word is what we’re there for,” said Bauman. “We’re going to help these people as much as we can.” Volunteers can be utilized in several different capacities, Bauman noted. She also mentioned that this is a wonderful opportunity for small groups to get involved.

In fact, one small group has made totes for the men containing necessities including toiletries and such. This is a contribution that the group has made for the past few years.

There are several opportunities to bolster this ministry and make it successful, including (but not limited to):

• Set-up on Sunday afternoon on May 31

• Staying overnight

• Laundry

• Transportation

• Intake/Check-in

• Morning clean-up and maintenance

• Cooking evening meals

• Cooking breakfast for either Wednesday or Saturday

• Nightly activities

• Tear-down on Sunday, June 7, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. According to Warren Campus Pastor Don Pedde, in the past people have volunteered services such as haircuts, massages and résumé help, or even just socializing and playing card games with the men.

“We would love to see people get involved in various ways or simply by coming to play table games with those men that would like to do that,” Pedde said. “Some of the men really crave that friendship and ‘family’ atmosphere.” “We would like to get as many people involved that would like to be,” Bauman said. “I think one of the greatest pleasures is helping somebody who truly needs the help.

“The people that we are ministering to feel the caring and the passion from our church members and volunteers….that’s what it says in Matthew 28:40 and that’s what we want to do.” Those wishing to volunteer can sign up online at www.woodsidebible.org. People may also use the communication cards located in the pews to indicate their willingness to help.

For MCREST to run smoothly there are many donations needed including perishable items (eggs, lunchmeat, cheese, and other foods for breakfast and lunch), non-perishable items (breakfast cereals, Chex mix, Little Debbie’s chocolate cupcakes, and such) and paper products. A more complete list of items that are needed is available on Woodside’s Web site.
