Youth Advisory Council Grant Keeps Kids Day Alive
Lisa Johnson
Kids Day at the fair has always combined free activities and games along with the opportunity to learn about safety and security for children.
This year’s Kids Day, on Wednesday, July 7, from 10a.m. to 2 p.m, was made possible with grant monies awarded from the Greenville Youth Advisory Council.
“With the economy the way it is, we were disappointed, but not surprised, when we lost our cooperate partner for the Kids Day event,” said Pat Schuster, Montcalm County 4-H Fair board president. “Then Shari Potter, our Kids Day coordinator, came up with the idea of applying for a grant from the Greenville Youth Advisory Council.” With the grant money, 4-H was able to retain some of the more costly but ultimately really effective programs, such as the bicycle helmet giveaway, and also our smoke detectors and life vests, said Potter.
“We also received smaller donations from several other area businesses and individuals,” she added.
One of the main events at the Kids Day is a child identification program, coordinated with ALEA Masonic Lodges.
The Masons of Greenville Lodge 96, Stanton Star Lodge 250 and Trufant Lodge 456 will be working together with some 4-H volunteers to put together child I.D. packets for parents and/or grandparents.
Each packet will consist of a DNA sample as well as a CD containing a photo, video, digital fingerprints and other vital information.
A new event at the Kids Day this year is a pedal pulling competition.
B&D Pedal Pullers will have its tractors there for the kids to try their hand at people- powered tractor pulling.
Registration to compete in the pedal pull begins at 10:30
a. m. on July 7.
There will be numerous free games with prizes and there will also be a bicycle giveaway.
The carnival will also be offering a ride special July 7.
Fair goers will be able to purchase a wristband that entitles them to ride all the rides they want from noon until closing for $14.
