YET Reading Club reads to the horses

Even horses like a good story. Children at the Yet Reading Club (Youth Education for Tomorrow) hosted by Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, in Belmont, enjoyed a fieldtrip to Stone Meadow Stables at the invitation of owners George and Linda Jewel.

The stables are located at 8605 Mowry, in Sand Lake.

Program teachers Mary Macomber, Susan White and several volunteers accompanied 25 student readers from schools in northern Kent County on the excursion. In the indoor arena the class learned about the care, feeding and grooming of horses. The class also enjoyed a riding exhibition presented by Brandi Feasel, Certified Horse Trainer. Feasel was up on horse-in-training Serenity (owned by Jeanine Oland) and demonstrated the walk, trot and canter.

After learning the proper technique, students fed carrots to the horses. Carli Noffsinger’s Arabian gelding Harley, and Jan Norris and her Appaloosa horse Charob also participated.

Then it was time to read.

The horses loved the attention. It is not known how much of the stories they understood but Charob seemed to really like the pictures.

YET Reading Club provides reading instruction and practice in an after school program funded by Heart of West Michigan United Way. The program is provided at no charge for students in Kent County.

Pupils in grades 1-3 are referred by teachers and parents. The program runs October through May, from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, in Belmont.
