Pocket Pullers Are Newest Fair Event
Lisa Johnson
The Montcalm County 4-H Fair Association is bringing a new grandstand event to the fair this year and it will be free to the public. On Tuesday evening July 6, at 7 p.m. Pocket Pullers will debut their special brand of entertainment at the fair. This group from the east side of the state puts on a tractor pull with a little twist. The tractors doing the pulling are considered quarter scale or garden tractors. In addition to stock garden tractors pulling, there are ultra-lights with motorcycle engines and modifieds with V-6 and V-8 engines.
“I grew-up on the tractor pulling circuit,” said Melissa Richardson, spokesperson for the Pocket Pullers.
“My dad started pulling farm stock tractors in 1994 and eventually moved on to modified tractors.” Richardson said the cost of building and maintaining a large modified wasn’t easily within her reach. Then a few years ago she met up with some people who did garden tractor pulls.
“It is a lot of the same excitement, it is just easier to participate and more family friendly with the smaller tractors.” Residents from the Montcalm County area are encouraged to come and enter their stock garden tractors in the pull.
There will be a 0 to 13 horse power class and a 14 to 20 horse power class.
“All they have to do is drop off their mower deck and come on in,” Richardson said. “We’ll see if we can’t get them hooked on the sport.”
